Assistant Professor: Insect Pest Management – Tree Nut IPM

Position: Twelve month, tenure-track Assistant Professor with responsibilities in tree nut production systems.  The position is budgeted at 60% research, 25% extension and 15% instruction.

Location: Department of Entomology, UGA-Tifton Campus.  Located within a 3-hour drive from 4 flagship college campuses, the UGA-Tifton campus is home to 90 scientists and more than 400 support staff.  On-campus resources include office, laboratory, greenhouse and rearing space, a 15-acre irrigated research orchard and all required agricultural machinery. 

Position Responsibilities: The appointee will develop a strong, extramurally funded research and extension program to support tree nut production with opportunities to pursue work in complimentary model systems.  With an annual farmgate value exceeding $350 million, Georgia growers currently lead the nation in pecan production.  The position has enjoyed a history of strong funding support from the Georgia Pecan Commission and allied industries. Research efforts should focus on areas that integrate levels of biological organization such as population/community ecology, biological control or insect ecology.  Demonstrated expertise in one or more areas including chemical ecology, toxicology, landscape ecology, resistance management or integration of agricultural systems is highly desirable.  Extension activities should focus on translating research results into improving sustainability and profitability of production practices.  Instructional activities will include teaching a course in general entomology and mentoring graduate students. 

Qualifications: Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Entomology, or closely related field, with a strong background of relevant course work, a strong record of scholarly achievement and excellent communication skills. 

The Department: The Department of Entomology at UGA consists of 33 faculty members situated in a stimulating, multi-campus environment with an excellent reputation in research, extension and teaching. The three campuses of the University of Georgia (Athens, Tifton and Griffin) are multidisciplinary, multi-agency facilities with access to well-equipped research farms throughout the state. Opportunities for collaboration within the UGA Pecan Team and with colleagues in other departments and institutions are plentiful and encouraged.
