Entomology 2017 Workshops

New this year, the Program Committee has added four Workshops to the conference schedule. Workshops are focused on science communication and professional development and will engage participants in an interactive educational experience. Advance registration is required for some of the workshops.

Ignite, Inspire, and Innovate through Education and Outreach
Organizers: David Held, John Guyton, Ronda Hamm, and Michelle Smith

The Education and Outreach Committee and Dow AgroSciences Science Ambassadors will lead hands-on activities highlighting STEM themes using insects or insect systems. These activities will be taught in small groups. This workshop will be useful for participants already involved with outreach and those with no prior experience with K-12 programs. For a deeper-dive into working with K-12 educators, consider attending the STEMbugs educator workshop on Saturday, November 4 (separate registration required).

Insect Genome Editing: Why and How
Organizers: Marcé Lorenzen, Jennifer A. Brisson, and David O'Brochta

Insect genome editing experts will present diverse examples of the application with technical details involved in executing their genome-editing projects. A tutorial on the design, analysis and synthesis of guide RNAs using web-based tools will be presented. Web-enabled devices are useful but not necessary for the tutorial.

Making the Switch: A Beginner’s Guide to R for Those Familiar with Other Packages
Organizer: Rebecca Schmidt-Jeffris

Join us for an introduction to key components of R. This interactive workshop will cover importing data, data manipulation, making figures, fitting a model, and making predictions. The workshop is designed for audiences who are new to R, but have some statistics background. Bring your laptop for this hands-on learning!

Promulgate Your Passion: Techniques to Create, Engage, and Communicate Science
Organizers: Aaron Pomerantz, Phil Torres, and Chris A. Johns

Introductory multimedia workshop (photography, video & graphic media basics). Oration/presentation techniques (exercises such as crafting elevator pitches for general audiences). Deep dive into digital/visual creative communication (includes hands-on activities that illustrate design fundamentals, the importance of branding, audience identification, and general workflows/processes for creative content production).
