Penn State Vegetable Production Extension Educator
The College of Agricultural Sciences is seeking an individual trained in Horticulture, Entomology or Plant Pathology with commercial vegetable production experience. As a member of the Extension Vegetable and Small Fruit State Team, the individual will identify industry needs including biosecurity, develop educational events and materials to support these needs, and participate in evaluations to measure the team’s success. The individuals will collaborate closely with University Park-based faculty to conduct applied research for the Pennsylvania Vegetable industry at the Southeast Research and Extension Center (SEAREC) in Landisville, PA. The individual must be able to work effectively in a team and with diverse populations and audiences. The successful candidate will participate in interdisciplinary collaborations across multiple disciplines and institutions. The individual will provide technical support for the vegetable industry in the areas of integrated pest management, food safety, and water quality. Program impact will be measured by adoption of integrated pest management practices to reduce human exposure, pesticide runoff into surface water and reduced likelihood of pesticide resistance; adoption of best management practices to reduce the occurrence of foodborne illnesses; increased profitability of agricultural producers. Critical performance measures include: technical assistance provided for vegetable production industry in geographic focus area; number of grant-funded research projects conducted at Southeast Research and Extension Center; educational presentations at local, state and national meetings; development of web-based educational outreach; development of a diverse external funding portfolio including grants, contracts, cost recovery, and sponsorship). This job will be filled as a level 3 or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. The candidate will be expected to develop original content to engage audiences through innovative educational methods such as online courses, videos, mobile apps, and electronic publications in addition to traditional publications and in-person presentations. Excellent verbal and written communications skills required in English and valued in Spanish. Candidates must possess teaching skills, interpersonal skills, ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and clientele, and work as an active member of a team. The candidate must be organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Proficiency in the use of computer software packages such as Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint. Must have the ability to carry equipment, educational materials and supplies with or without accommodation and the ability to travel. Must possess a valid driver's license and use of a private automobile. Since this position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties, successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
