Research Consultant

Job Announcement, Entomology                   8 February 2017                             Please circulate

Seeking: A post-doctoral research consultant to develop phytosanitary temperature treatments for exotic tephritid fruit flies

Funding period: 2 years

Start Date: August 2017

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience

Location: This position will be located at the Joint FAO / IAEA Insect Pest Control Laboratory in Seibersdorf, Austria.

Project Outline: Exotic tephritid fruit flies pose a high level risk to U.S. agriculture as repeated introductions in fruit production areas can trigger localized quarantines and present trade barriers for exports. Imported citrus and other tropical fruits moved internationally often rely on temperature treatments such as cold storage or vapor heat to allow safe movement of these commodities. Data to support these treatments are lacking for a number of economically important tephritid species. Developing effective treatment schedules will facilitate movement of host commodities both within the U.S. and internationally.

The successful candidate will be responsible for building on previous work at FAO/IAEA Seibersdorf to establish new treatments for species and commodities where treatment data are lacking as well as to develop “generic” treatments that are applicable to multiple tephritid species, commodities and/or fruit cultivars. The research will focus on conventional temperature treatments used for international movement of fruit fly host commodities (such as citrus and tropical fruits), but will also include investigations into vapor heat and modified atmosphere treatments for phytosanitary use. An advanced university degree in entomology or a related field is required. The successful candidate will have excellent written and oral communication skills (in English), a strong background in statistics and data analysis and a demonstrated ability to produce peer-reviewed publications. Experience with insect rearing, insect physiology, development of phytosanitary treatments such as heat, cold, and chemical/fumigation is preferred.
