Student Infographic Competition Information

Students are eligible for the competition for 12 months after the month of graduation, with current ESA student or student transition membership.

While all presenters may submit one oral and one poster or infographic to the Annual Meeting program, students may only submit one presentation to the student competition. 

Student creators who present infographics in the Student Competition will be evaluated in the following areas:

Scientific Content (50%)

• Title is short, original, intriguing, and appropriate for content; judges will score the title given on the infographic, not what is listed in the program (5 points)
• Content is concise and easy to understand but accuracy is not compromised. It is understood that an infographic is different than a scientific poster; information presented is accessible to a wide audience (10 points)
• Content creates intrigue and/or surprise (10 points)
• Message is clear - Do you think the viewer would come away with a better understanding of the subject after viewing the infographic? (10 points)
• Significance of subject matter is clear. What new information does the infographic present and why is it important? (10 points)
• Relevant citations are included (5 points)

Display (50%)

• Big picture, "take home" message is immediately evident (10 points)
• Effective use of space; Design elements (text and visuals) are appropriate for the format with good use of negative (empty) space - infographic feels neither too crowded nor too empty. (10 points)
• Legible with large fonts, color contrast, no conflicting backgrounds (for example, avoiding color schemes that are hard to distinguish for colorblind participants like red/green) (5 points)
• Overall infographic is pleasant to view and engages the audience (5 points)
• Use of graphical elements is creative, innovative, functional [QR code], and/or helps drive viewer understanding (10 points)
• Infographic is memorable and/or inspires viewer to learn more or take action (10 points)

Each infographic display is judged independently by three judges. In the event of a tie, the Student Competition Co-Chairs will use the abstract to determine a winner.

Students compete only against the students in their infographic session and not against other students in the same topic area who were assigned to other sessions. The size of each session is dependent upon the initial number of posters submitted to a specific topic area.
