Could you be the next Entomology Games Gamesmaster?
The ESA Entomology Games Committee is seeking applicants for the ESA National Gamesmaster for the Entomology Games. The deadline to apply is April 29, 2024.
Competitive applicants will have a combination of the following preferred experiences and skills, which should be addressed in the application:
- strong public speaking skills (including pronunciation of scientific names, chemical compounds, etc.);
- familiarity with the Entomology Games (e.g., through Branch- or national-level committee service, participation, or attendance);
- broad-based entomological interest and knowledge;
- commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Role Description and Term Length
Individuals interested in serving as Gamesmaster of the Entomology Games at the annual meeting of the Entomological Society of America (hereafter, "national Gamesmaster") will serve a four-year term starting in 2024. The first two years of the term (2024 and 2025) will be as a trainee. The trainee will act as Gamesmaster of the Virtual Games if and when they are conducted and will serve as a backup for the national Gamesmaster. The final two years of the term (2026 and 2027) will be as national Gamesmaster. Both the trainee and the national Gamesmaster will be members of the national-level Entomology Games Committee throughout their term and are expected to participate in committee meetings and contribute to committee tasks in addition to their Gamesmaster duties.
Eligibility
To be eligible to enter into the four-year trainee/national Gamesmaster commitment, the candidate must be an active ESA member at the time of their application and for the entirety of the four-year term. There is no limit to the number of four-year trainee/national Gamesmaster terms that can be served, although there will be no consecutive terms owing to the progressive structure of the role.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit an application to the committee by April 29, 2024, for consideration. The application should include:
- A narrative describing their background, experience, and interest in serving as Gamesmaster (limited to one page)
- An abbreviated CV (limited to two pages).
- Candidates will also be asked to submit a short audio file of themselves reading some example Entomology Games questions. A script containing the questions to be read will be sent to the candidate after receipt of their written application, on April 29, 2024. The audio file must be submitted by EOB on May 8, 2024.
Selection Process
The incoming trainee will be selected every other year by a simple majority of the voting members of the national-level Entomology Games Committee, which will be determined by an anonymous vote. View the scoring rubric.
