Melissa Willrich Siebert Elected as Next Vice President-Elect of Entomological Society of America
Annapolis, MD; August 30, 2023—Melissa Willrich Siebert, Ph.D., development leader for insecticides at Corteva Agriscience, has been elected by members of the Entomological Society of America as the organization's next Vice President-Elect. ESA members also elected three other entomologists to begin or continue positions on the ESA Governing Board.
Braman, Peterson Earn Honorary Membership at Entomological Society of America
Annapolis, MD; August 30, 2023—In recognition of their long-term dedication and significant contributions to the Entomological Society of America (ESA), two entomologists have been selected as Honorary Members of the Society in 2023: S. Kris Braman, University of Georgia; and Robert K.D. Peterson, Montana State University.
Malaria in the U.S.: A Wake-Up Call to Strengthen Vector-Borne Disease Response
Annapolis, MD; August 23, 2023—Every day, entomologists work to protect Americans from diseases spread by mosquitoes. Supporting this critical public health infrastructure is a core priority for the Entomological Society of America and its partners in the Vector-Borne Disease Network. Recent news of cases of locally transmitted malaria in Maryland, Texas, and Florida—as well as dengue in Florida—further illustrate the urgent need to expand our nation's capacity to prevent and respond to the threats posed by mosquitoes, ticks, and other arthropod carriers (vectors) of disease.
Hesler Chosen to Lead Journal of Insect Science
Annapolis, MD; August 23, 2023—Louis S. Hesler, Ph.D., lead scientist and research entomologist at the Integrated Cropping Systems Unit of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service, has been selected as the new editor-in-chief of the Entomological Society of America's Journal of Insect Science. The ESA Governing Board approved Hesler's selection in August after an open search. He will succeed Phyllis Weintraub, Ph.D., who will step down at the end of 2023 after serving as editor-in-chief since 2015.
ESA Names 2023 Professional and Student Award Honorees
Annapolis, MD; August 23, 2023—The Entomological Society of America congratulates the recipients of its 2023 awards. ESA Awards & Honors recognize scientists, educators, and students who have distinguished themselves through their contributions to entomology. Award honorees will be showcased during Entomology 2023, November 5-8, in Natinoal Harbor, Maryland.
Lysyk Selected as New Co-Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Medical Entomology
Annapolis, MD; August 9, 2023—Timothy J. Lysyk, Ph.D., entomologist and retired research scientist from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, has been selected as a new co-editor-in-chief of the Entomological Society of America's Journal of Medical Entomology. The ESA Governing Board approved Lysyk's selection in July after an open search. He will join current editor-in-chief David B. Taylor, Ph.D., in sharing leadership of the journal. Taylor has served as editor-in-chief since January 2022.
Six Entomologists Honored as 2023 Fellows of the Entomological Society of America
Annapolis, MD; July 25, 2023—The Governing Board of the Entomological Society of America has elected six new Fellows of the Society for 2023. Election as a Fellow of ESA acknowledges outstanding contributions to entomology via research, teaching, extension, administration, military service, or public engagement and science policy.
ESA Reaffirms Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Entomology

Public Health Entomology Internship, Fellowship Program Grows in Second Year
Annapolis, MD; July 12, 2023—The Entomological Society of America congratulates the 2023 class of interns and fellows selected for the Public Health Entomology for All program. In partnership with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ESA expanded the Public Health Entomology For All (PHEFA) program in 2023 to include two-year fellowships, more one-year fellowship and internships, and even an experience for high-school students. The goal of PHEFA is to encourage students and recent graduates interested in social justice and health equity to pursue entomology as a career and work toward a future in which all communities benefit from creative, inclusive, and equitable scientific processes and solutions.
BioOne, ESA Extend Partnership to Preserve and Disseminate Entomological Research Spanning 100+ Years
Annapolis, MD; June 27, 2023—A trove of more than 160 eBooks in insect science is now available on the BioOne Digital Library, through an extension of BioOne's partnership with the Entomological Society of America. With the launch of the ESA eBook Collection, BioOne and ESA have partnered to source, digitize, and make fully searchable critical books from ESA's catalog.
