Annapolis, MD; July 25, 2022—The Entomological Society of America has adopted "northern giant hornet" for the species Vespa mandarinia in its Common Names of Insects and Related Organisms List. Vespa mandarinia is an invasive hornet native to Asia that has been the target of eradication efforts in Washington state, USA, and British Columbia, Canada, after individual hornets were first discovered there in 2019. It has been referred to elsewhere as "Asian giant hornet" or "murder hornet."

Annapolis, MD; July 1, 2022—Thursday's decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in West Virginia v. EPA poses grave risks for our environment and, by extension, all life on Earth. In particular, the millions of species of insects on our planet—already experiencing dramatic declines in parts of the world due to climate change, habitat loss, pollution, and other human-driven threats—will face further irreversible losses as a result of this decision.

This decision creates barriers for countless women working to fulfill their potential, including pursuing valuable careers in science.

Annapolis, MD; May 9, 2022—Christopher Beatty, Ph.D., visiting scholar in the Program for Conservation Genomics at Stanford University, has been selected to deliver the Founders' Memorial Award lecture at the 2022 Joint Annual Meeting of the Entomological Societies of America, Canada, and British Columbia.

As armed forces roll further into Ukraine, we fear for our colleagues, friends, and family who are in harm's way, and we wish for a peaceful resolution to this conflict to be found soon. Annapolis, MD; March 2, 2022—"Spongy moth" has been formally adopted as the new common name for the moth species Lymantria dispar by the Entomological Society of America.

Annapolis, MD; January 25, 2022—A group of entomologists and forestry professionals convened by the Entomological Society of America has recommended “spongy moth” as the new common name for the moth species Lymantria dispar.
