The Governing Board met virtually on March 20 for its regularly scheduled first-quarter meeting. During the meeting, the board took the following actions:
- Approved a new policy for the Society on the use of artificial intelligence in the development and deployment of Society programs and services.
- Approved, with a small alteration, the proposal to set 2026 pricing for ESA journals recommended by ESA's publishing partner, Oxford University Press.
- Approved three recommendations from the Financial Task Force: to update the Society's investment policy statement, encourage headquarters to seek out other organizations with which ESA could partner to host mission-related meetings, and to encourage the Publications Council to consider the development of a new journal designed to capture some of the articles currently being published by other providers.
- Approved three recommendations from the Common Names of Insects and Related Organisms Committee, which added one new common name and removed three others.
- Approved an update to procedures for both the Student Affairs Committee and the Awards and Honors Committee.
- Approved a new position description and an update to the annual review process for the ESA executive director.
The board also
- Engaged in an exercise to review and update the Society's strategic plan.
- Received and approved reports and updates from the ESA Committee on Finance, the Publications Council, the Science Policy Committee, the 2025 Annual Meeting Program Committee, the Governance Upgrade Task Force, and ESA headquarters.
- Approved minutes from the most recent Governing Board and Executive Committee meetings.
The ESA Governing Board also convened as the ESA Certification Corporation Governing Board. During that portion of the meeting, the board:
- Discussed the program's performance and heard updates on recent programmatic developments.
- Approved the minutes from the prior meeting.
