Report From the June 2024 ESA Governing Board Meeting

The Governing Board met June 27-28 in Phoenix, Arizona. During the meeting the board approved:

  • The nominations for three Honorary Members
  • The class of 2024 Fellows
  • A new Standard Operating Procedures manual for the Publications Council

The board also took the following actions:

  • Discussed the existing conflict of interest (COI) policy used by the Society. After discussion, the ESA Committee on Ethics and Rules was assigned to review the matter and make recommendations to the board on how to improve the policy.
  • Reviewed and approved the 2023 audit and the report from the Audit Committee.
  • Reviewed and supported recommendations from the ESA Committee on Finance to set rates for 2025 membership dues and registration fees.
  • Made minor adjustments to the process by which the board reviews nominations for Fellows of the ESA. A task force was formed to review how the judging process is described to the membership.
  • Approved financial support for development of content modules for the Society’s new learning management system.
  • Approved minutes from the most recent Governing Board and Executive Committee meetings.

The board also:

  • Continued a discussion on modernizing ESA’s governance structure, in response to a report from the Task Force on Governance Review and a strategic session held with an industry consultant.
  • Considered a proposal to investigate a new program that would focus on supporting the educational needs of scientists who move into managerial roles.
  • Discussed trends in both higher education and non-academic educational opportunities.
  • Received reports from most ESA headquarters departments.
  • Approved reports received from most committees, Sections, and Branches.

The ESA Governing Board also convened as the ESA Certification Corporation Governing Board. During that portion of the meeting, the board:

  • Discussed challenges facing the credentialing programs, including the workload of volunteer leaders.
  • Received updates on program development.
  • Reviewed the 2025 fees and approved minutes from the prior meeting.
