March 31, 2023
The Governing Board held a virtual meeting on March 22. During the meeting, the Board took the following actions:
- Approved the 2022 Annual Meeting Program co-chairs' report.
- Reconsidered a joint motion from the Southeastern and Southwestern Branches—postponed from the November 2022 meeting—which sought a regular rotation of the ESA Annual Meeting through the Branch regions. Following a presentation and discussion on how meeting locations are chosen, the motion was denied.
- Approved a recommended motion from the Ethics and Rules Committee to participate in a pilot program of a new tool provided by the Societies Consortium on Sexual Harassment in STEMM, which seeks to surface unethical behavior in the sciences.
- Approved the 2024 journals pricing recommended by our publishing partner, Oxford University Press.
- Approved several new common names recommended by the Common Names of Insects and Related Organisms Committee.
- Approved the minutes from the last board meeting and the two prior Executive Committee meetings.
The Board also discussed:
- Presidential initiatives, including the biodiversity task force, the education task force, and developing plans for the 2023 Annual Meeting in National Harbor, Maryland.
- Several operational updates, such as the upcoming move of the headquarters office, the summer strategy day on publications, Society finances, the ESA database, and reports from the spring Branch Meetings.
- The rules on Fellows nominations.
- A proposed partnership between the ESA and the Council on the International Congress of Entomology.
The ESA Governing Board also convened as the ESA Certification Corporation Governing Board. The Board reviewed the certification program's 2023 performance, discussed recent marketing efforts, and approved the minutes from the prior meeting.
