Report From the September 2022 ESA Governing Board Meeting

The Governing Board held a virtual meeting on September 15. During the meeting, the Board took the following actions:

  • Adopted a new procedures manual to guide ESA Governing Board operations;
  • Clarified the 2023-2025 budget planning process by moving to exclude revenue and expenses related to the CDC Cooperative Agreement when calculating the level of financial versus strategic reserves; and
  • Approved the minutes from the July 28 and August 18 Executive Committee meetings and the June 30 and July 1 Governing Board meetings.

The board also discussed:

  • The 2023-2025 strategic planning process, including a draft vision statement and three primary objectives: Maximizing Knowledge Sharing, Increasing Awareness and Visibility; and Enhancing Operational Efficiencies;
  • The newly established Biodiversity Task Force;
  • Headquarters operations, including a review of the evolution of ESA's revenue sources, staffing updates, the Branch Evolution Project, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Cooperative Agreement, and a recent announcement from the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy regarding open-access requirements for federally funded research;
  • A recent proposal related to meeting expansion strategies;
  • Board operating procedures, including the level of oversight the Board wishes to have on contract proposals;
  • A report from the Diversity and Inclusion Committee suggesting ways to improve the diversity of individuals featured in the American Entomologist Legends column; and
  • How the Society's investment income is handled and the effect of financial markets on ESA's finances.
