Incoming SysEB Section Vice President-Elect

Dr. Jennifer Zaspel earned her BS in Agriculture (with an Entomology emphasis) and MS in Entomology from the University of Minnesota.  She earned a PhD in Entomology and Nematology from the University of Florida in 2008.  Her PhD research was on fruit and skin-piercing moths in the subfamily Calpinae, and resulted in a Best Dissertation and Award of Excellence in Graduate Research. Dr. Zaspel held a postdoctoral position at the University of Minnesota and faculty positions at the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh and Purdue University. Dr. Zaspel has recently taken the position of Curator of Zoology at the Milwaukee Public Museum where her responsibilities include leading an internationally recognized research program, overseeing invertebrate and vertebrate zoology collections, and directing the Puelicher Butterfly Vivarium.

Jennifer has over 15 years of experience in collections-based research and management, including two years as the Director of the UW-Oshkosh Insect Collection, and four years as Director of the Purdue Entomological Research Collection. Her research program is focused on the systematics and evolution of plant and animal host associations in erebid moths. Her field program has involved research in Far Eastern Russia, Thailand, Australia, South Korea, Costa Rica, Nepal, and numerous locations the US. Dr. Zaspel served on the executive council for the Lepidopterists’ Society for 3 years, SysEB Treasurer for over 3 years, and currently holds a position on the Journal of Medical and Veterinary Entomology Editorial Board.
