Call for Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Economic Entomology

The Entomological Society of America is seeking candidates to serve in the position of co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Economic Entomology. The selected candidate's term will begin in January 2026, although training and orientation could begin earlier. This editor will serve alongside current Co-Editors-in-Chief Michael Brewer, Ph.D., and Lisa Neven, Ph.D.

The Journal of Economic Entomology publishes articles on the economic significance of insects and other arthropods. In addition to research articles, the Journal of Economic Entomology publishes reviews, forum articles, short communications, and letters to the editor. The journal began publishing in 1908, and its most recent impact factor was 2.2, which placed it No. 23 among 109 entomology journals in the Journal Citation Index. It receives more than 900 submissions per year and currently has 56 subject editors.

Qualifications

  • A comprehensive background and broad experience within the areas covered by the journal's scope.
  • Experience writing, editing, and reviewing scientific research manuscripts, as well as previous journal editorial experience.
  • Able to collaborate with authors, subject editors, editorial boards, ESA staff, and others involved in the journal in a positive, professional, inclusive, fair, and constructive manner.
  • Able to devote the time and energy necessary to conduct outreach on the journal's behalf and ensure that published articles are of the highest quality and scientific interest.
  • Well-connected in the field to effectively seek out expertise when recruiting new subject editors, inviting manuscript submissions, and finding reviewers.
  • Ph.D. in entomology or related discipline; professional experience at the mid-career level or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Provide scientific leadership for the Journal of Economic Entomology.
  • Uphold the vision, scope, and policies of the journal and communicate those elements to authors, subject editors, and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in creating and implementing journal strategy.
  • Review initial submissions for quality and appropriateness to journal scope, and assign manuscripts to subject editors, who manage the peer review and editing processes.
  • Work to ensure that articles published are of the highest quality and scientific interest and that the peer review process proceeds smoothly, fairly, and efficiently.
  • Participate in paper and special collection recruitment.
  • Recruit and mentor subject editors when needed, ensuring the group is diverse in expertise, geography, gender, race, ethnicity, and other measures of diversity.
  • Act as an ambassador for the journal when attending professional conferences and events.
  • Co-chair the Journal of Economic Entomology Editorial Board and participate in quarterly calls.

This is primarily a volunteer position, but the editor-in-chief will receive an honorarium of $4,000 and will be reimbursed for expenses, including registration, travel, and housing for the ESA Annual Meeting. The initial appointment is for a term of four years. The expected workload is approximately five to 10 hours per week but varies with manuscript quality and quantity. Editors-in-chief receive significant support in the management and strategy of the journal from ESA staff, Oxford University Press, and publication volunteers.

Scientists of all backgrounds and identities, including identities that are underrepresented or minoritized in entomology, are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

The deadline for applications is May 21, 2025. Interested candidates should submit the following to the Journal of Economic Entomology EIC search committee via pubs@entsoc.org: cover letter describing their qualifications for the position (including any prior editorial experience) and vision and goals for the journal; curriculum vitae; and reprints of two published articles that best represent the candidate's work.

A search committee of JEE Editorial Board members and ESA Publications Council members, along with the current co-EICs, will review all applications, conduct interviews, and submit a recommendation to the ESA Governing Board for approval.
