Flexible Publishing Options for Entomology Research
ESA's journals offer a range of publishing models designed to maximize the visibility and impact of entomological research. Whether you're publishing in a traditional or open-access journal, ESA and Oxford University Press provide a variety of discounts, waivers, and institutional agreements to help make publishing more accessible.
Key Benefits for Authors
- ESA members receive a 50% discount on standard publication in our hybrid subscription journals.
- ESA members receive a 20% discount on open-access publication fees.
- Members without publication funding may apply for a standard publication waiver for one article annually1.
- There is no charge to publish Letters to the Editor, Editorials, or Student Debates.
- Standard publication charges may be discounted or waived depending on the corresponding author's geographic location.
- Many institutions participate in Oxford University Press Read and Publish agreements that may cover open-access publishing costs.
ESA Membership Standard Publication Waiver
ESA members who do not have funding available to cover publication costs may apply for a 100% Standard Publication Waiver for one article per calendar year. To be eligible, the corresponding author must provide their membership ID during the submission process and attest that:
- No author on the manuscript has institutional, departmental, discretionary, or grant funding available to cover publication charges.
- The authors are not eligible for funding through a country-based waiver program or a Read and Publish agreement.
- No other funding source or budget is available to pay the publication fee.
- Important Information
- Waivers are subject to the availability of funds at the time the manuscript is accepted and enters production.
- ESA membership must be active during the year of publication. Authors are responsible for maintaining their membership status through publication, particularly for articles accepted near the end of the calendar year.
- This waiver applies only to articles published under a standard license and does not cover Open Access fees.
Authors who are not ESA members at the time of submission may choose to join ESA after their manuscript is accepted to receive the member publication rate. However, member discounts and publication fee adjustments cannot be applied once a manuscript has been transferred to the production team following acceptance or after publication. An author who plans to become ESA member upon acceptance is strongly encouraged to notify the Editorial Office by email at the time of submission.
For questions about member publication fees, waiver eligibility, please contact the ESA Editorial Office at pubs@entsoc.org.
Open Access Publishing Support
Oxford University Press (OUP) has a growing number of "Read and Publish" agreements with institutions and consortia that provide funding for open-access publishing. Authors from participating institutions can publish open access, and the institution may pay the charge. Find out if your institution has a "Read and Publish" agreement with OUP.
Oxford University Press automatically waives or discounts article processing charges in fully open-access journals for eligible authors as part of its developing countries waiver policy. ESA's fully open-access journals are: Journal of Insect Science, Arthropod Management Tests, and Journal of Integrated Pest Management. See if you qualify: Developing Countries APC Waiver Policy.
